World's First Metaboots

Every year, Construct: 10061 meets to re-imagine footwear, and what it's capable of. More and more, the physical design process is being augmented with a virtual design process. Enabled by a suite of Epic Games tools. Quixel Megascans to bring the rich textures and geometry of the real world into the virtual world. Twinmotion to combine these resources to create detailed visualisations. And Sketchfab, to distribute AR representations of these footwear concepts to the industry. While each of these tools are immensely powerful, they're also mostly limited to professionals.

We were tasked with bringing the Construct: 10061 design journey to a mass audience. Fortunately, there is an Epic Games tool for that too. Fortnite is an immensely popular platform, with powerful UGC capability, built on the very same foundations as the professional tools Construct: 10061 use in their design process.

We brought together cutting edge footwear innovators, and Beyond Creative: a team of best-in-class Fortnite builders to build the Timberland Construct Design Lab, a recreation of their physical world design space: The Shed. Branching off from the shed, we built three parkour 'death runs'. Each followed a physical nature theme; one desert, one forest and one arctic. At the end of each run, players were rewarded with a colossal 'Metaboot', created in the theme of the deathrun that came before. These boots were built in collaboration with Beyond Creative and Construct: 10061 designers. Each team were set a time limit of 3 hours, and access to 1 of 3 Fortnite prop libraries, each one representing a different natural theme. 450k players jumped in to reach the boots, and spent an average 18 minutes doing so.

During this campaign, I contributed to, and was responsible for initial concepting, creative development of the space and experience, working directly with the Fortnite build teams, providing a translation layer between the specialist build teams and the client, producing the majority of dynamic and static assets, and presenting work to a suite of fashion reporters at a launch event at Milan Design Week.
